The Challenge
Cornerstone Lodge No. 12 received an ADA accessibility complaint regarding their website. The site had numerous accessibility barriers: images without alt text, form fields without labels, insufficient color contrast, broken keyboard navigation, and a PDF trestleboard that was completely inaccessible to screen readers. The Lodge needed rapid remediation to address the complaint and wanted assurance that the site would meet accessibility standards going forward.
The Solution
I conducted a comprehensive WCAG 2.1 AA audit combining automated scanning with manual testing using screen readers (NVDA and VoiceOver) and keyboard-only navigation. The audit identified 47 distinct accessibility issues across the site. I prioritized critical issues affecting navigation and form submission, then worked through every finding systematically. All images received descriptive alt text. Forms were rebuilt with proper labels, error messages, and keyboard accessibility. Color contrast was improved across the entire design. The PDF trestleboard was replaced with an accessible HTML version. An accessibility statement was added to the site, and I provided documentation for maintaining compliance with future content updates.
Outcome & Impact
The site achieved full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, resolving the ADA complaint. All 47 identified issues were remediated. The Lodge now has automated accessibility monitoring in place and receives quarterly manual audits to maintain compliance. The improved accessibility has also been positively received by older members who benefit from better contrast and larger touch targets.
